The 2008 Indiana Chapter NATS Student Auditions will be held Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Indiana State University. Make your plans to be there!
Application materials must be postmarked by Saturday, October 4, 2008.

GOVERNOR’S NEWSLETTER, FALL 2008
NATS INDIANA CHAPTER Greetings, Colleagues! I hope the beginning of your respective semesters is going well and that you are making plans to attend and to bring students to the Indiana State Chapter Student Auditions on November 1 at Indiana State University! Special thanks go to our 2007 Audition hosts in Terre Haute, especially to Colleen Davis and David Mannell for organizing a wonderfully coordinated day for us last October and graciously and generously offered to host the Auditions again this year. The Indiana Chapter NATSAA auditions were held February 16, 2008 at Butler University. Hearty congratulations go to our State winner, Marcie Wagnon, who represented the Chapter with beautiful singing at the Regional NATSAA Auditions, February 29 at Ball State University. If you would like to make a special contribution to the Indiana State NATSAA fund to assist our State’s future NATSAA winners with travel expenses to the next level of the competition, there is a space for this purpose on the November Auditions Teacher Registration Form. Indiana Chapter members and their students made a great showing at this year’s Regional Auditions, held in at Ball State University on March 1. Indiana students won the majority of awards; four of the five special awards given at the Regional level. The next Great Lakes Regional Student Auditions will take place, Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Youngstown State University. Please mark your calendar and make plans to attend! In June, among the more than 760 attendees at the NATS 50th National Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, were twenty-two Indiana Chapter members. Those were: René Anderson, Ruth Chapman, Philip Christiansen, Amy Cope, Paulette Davidson, Lisa Dawson, Ellen Denham, Teri Herron, Brian Horne, Tammie Huntington, Katie Kellog, Kathie Kelton, Paul Kiesgan, Marcia Lewis, Kathleen Maurer, Lisa Miller, Natasia Sexton, Caroline Smith, Loralee Songer, Keith Tonne, Jay White, and Mei Zhong. We were happy to see so many of our Associate Members from Indiana University attending the conference. Indiana members presenting sessions at the 2008 NATS National Conference were: Paul Kiesgen Jay White Indiana members presenting poster paper sessions at the 2008 NATS National Conference were: Mei Zhong Kathleen Maurer The conference was a great success, inspiring attendees to employ new ideas and teaching tools upon returning to their studios. This Summer, the NATS Board crafted and enacted a new policy this year that will affect all of us: NO PHOTOCOPIES WILL BE ALLOWED AT ANY NATS AUDITION. ACCOMPANISTS MUST PLAY FROM ORIGINAL SCORES. Also, please note that in order to have students participate in the State Auditions, a teacher must be a current member in good standing, with both National and Indiana State Chapter dues paid in full. Our Chapter dues are $30.00 per fiscal year. If you have not yet joined either National NATS or State NATS, or are in arrears, please make a point to update your status at your earliest convenience, so that you may participate in the Auditions in November. While our website is under construction (again), you can get to our Chapter’s information, forms, etc. through a link at www.nats-in.org. This will take you to our wiki. The wiki allows everyone to post and add material. I have set up a calendar on the site, where you can make upcoming performances known to all of us. I hope you will try it. About Us

We are the Indiana Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), a professional organization of voice teachers. Our members include private teachers as well as teachers in colleges and universities in Indiana, most of whom have advanced degrees in music. Our mission is to encourage the highest standards of the vocal art and of ethical principles in the teaching of singing; and to promote vocal education and research at all levels, both for the enrichment of the general public and for the professional advancement of the talented.

Each Fall Semester the chapter sponsors its annual Student Auditions. The Student Auditions are for voice students of all ages and all levels of vocal development. Each students sings for three judges (who are all voice teachers and members of NATS) and receives written comments. The first place winners in each category are presented in a Recital of Promise at the end of the auditions. Cash prizes are awarded to the top winners in each category. We also host the biennial State Auditions of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Award Competition (NATSAA). The winner of the first round of this national competition goes on to represent the state at the Regional competition. The next NATSAA auditions will be in February 2010. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Indiana Chapter of NATS, you must first become a member of the national organization.

NATS INDIANA CHAPTER Greetings to all of you! I hope that your school years are all off to a wonderful start. A hearty THANK YOU to our hosts at The University of Evansville for all that they did to make last October’s State Student Auditions such a success! These auditions were our first under the new structure, in which our State Auditions, held in the Fall, work in conjunction with the Regional Auditions, held in the Spring. Under the new guidelines, only our State Winners advance to the Regional Auditions. Congratulations to the many Indiana students among the winners at the Regional Auditions, held March 11, 2006 at Grand Valley State University, Michigan. This year’s INDIANA STATE STUDENT AUDITIONS will be held SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2006 at BUTLER UNIVERSITY in Indianapolis. Winners from these auditions will advance to the Great Lakes Region Student Auditions, to be held March 3, 2007 at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. Mark your calendars now! Mr. David Mannell, Treasurer Congratulations to Dr. Caroline Smith, our new Great Lakes Regional Governor! Caroline, as well as several other Indiana Chapter members, attended the NATS Convention in Minneapolis in July, where there were many lively discussions among attendees concerning ideas for increasing chapter membership and participation. Please encourage your voice teacher friends and colleagues to apply for membership in NATS or to apply for reactivation of their membership, if they have lapsed in paying their dues. Norma Codispoti, the Great Lakes Liaison member for the NATS Foundation, recently corresponded with our chapter, encouraging us all to consider making contributions to the NATS Foundation. She writes:
The NATS Foundation is a partner of NATS and is responsible for generating support through the development and management of various endowment funds, such as are used to provide some of the prize monies for the NATSAA Artist Awards Competition, for example. The Foundation offers scholarship funds to qualified applicants for the Aspen Summer Music Festival and NATS workshops. It also sponsors the Van Lawrence Fellowship and Awards for Vocal Excellence. It utilizes its resources to help finance innovative programs such as the NATS Intern Program, the NATS Young Leader Awards, and the International Congress of Voice Teachers. NATS INDIANA CHAPTER Greetings! I hope that your school year is off to a wonderful start. It was good to see so many of you at the State Student Auditions last October. The judging schedules were purposefully organized to allow most everyone a bit of time to catch their breath, grab a bite to eat, and chat with old and new colleagues. I was particularly pleased to see so many of you finding time to visit with each other in the hospitality room. A hearty THANK YOU to David Mannell for the countless things he did to make the day such a success! Congratulations to the many Indiana students among the winners at the Regional Auditions, held March 3, 2007 at Ball State University. This year’s INDIANA STATE STUDENT AUDITIONS will be held SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2007 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. All the information you will need for October’s State Auditions is contained in this mailing. The postmark deadline for applications is SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2007. Please note that in order to have students participate in the State Auditions, a teacher must be a current member in good standing, with both National and Indiana State Chapter dues paid in full. Our Chapter dues are $30.00 per fiscal year. If you have not yet joined either National NATS or State NATS, or are in arrears, please make a point to update your status at your earliest convenience, so that you may participate in October. Winners from our state auditions will advance to the Great Lakes Region Student Auditions, to be held March 1, 2008 at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. It is possible that these auditions will begin in the afternoon of Friday, February 29, depending on the number of students who participate. Please mark your calendars now for Friday afternoon/evening (tentatively) and Saturday! The Indiana NATSAA (NATS Artist Award) competition will be Saturday, February 16 at Butler University. Further information and application forms are available at www.nats.org. There is a space on the Teacher Registration Form for the October Auditions where you may make a special contribution to the Indiana State NATSAA fund. These monies are a particular help to our winners, helping them to travel to the next level of the competition. Our Indiana Chapter of NATS is becoming more and more vibrant each year, thanks to your participation. Do you have voice-teaching friends who are not yet members of NATS or who may have once belonged to the organization and have let their memberships lapse? Please encourage them to apply or re-apply for membership! Our State Chapter’s website, http://www.nats-in.org was a great help us in the student auditions last year, saving the chapter many, many dollars’ worth of postage. There will be more frequent updates to the site during this school year. A new feature on the website is a list of (most of) our current State Chapter members. There are photos of many of you there, taken last October. This can help us all put names and faces together! If you find mistakes in your e-mail address, your name, etc. (as I am SURE that there are many there), please contact me: kkelton@butler.edu, with the correction. All of the information and forms that are contained in this mailing are also available to download from our website. We also now have a BLOG. The address is www.nats-in.blogspot.com. There is a link to this address on our website. You will be receiving an e-mail “inviting” you to use the blog, so you might adjust your spam filter to accept mail from blogspot.com. It is my hope that we can continue to communicate more easily with each other during the year, using this tool. Never used a blog? It’s not difficult! I hope you will try it! I have posted several questions (kind of “survey” questions) that my colleagues and I have often wondered about, pertaining to how other institutions handle various matters pertaining to vocal study. Ron Berry is generously continuing to give his time to maintain our web site. We would like to post information about your upcoming performances and master classes. We want to know about faculty recitals and opera/musical theatre events, guest master teachers, etc. By spreading the word amongst our membership, we hope that more of us might attend each other’s performances, as well as encourage our students to support their peers at other institutions.
